GM
Participates in AIDS Prevention Campaign in China
Aims to Raise Health Awareness among University
Students
Beijing
– In advance of World
AIDS Day on December 1, hundreds of university students from China’s capital assembled at the Peking University Health Science Center yesterday to participate in a
discussion on the prevention of AIDS and the promotion of physical and mental
health. The activity was organized
by General Motors, Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, TB, and Malaria, WHO
as a means of promoting the message “Campus in
Harmony.”

This
activity is part of a series of activities themed “Building Campuses in Harmony
with Friendship and Health,” which involves several Beijing universities.
Participants at yesterday’s program
signed their names on banners, pledged to pay special attention to AIDS
prevention, and agreed to support AIDS awareness at their schools.
It
is hoped that along with the forthcoming World AIDS Day, this series of
activities will help university students adopt a positive attitude toward life
and build strong, healthy campuses. According to GM, AIDS poses a formidable
challenge to the entire human race. Students are energetic, sophisticated and
responsible individuals who need to be made aware of the need for AIDS
prevention and the importance of not discriminating against AIDS victims.

GM
actively supports AIDS prevention around the world. In China, GM works
closely with government institutions, professional groups and non-government
organizations. In 2006, GM joined
China’s Ministry of Health and the
Global
Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS
in sponsoring the showing of the Chinese version of “A Closer Walk.” The documentary promotes
understanding and care for AIDS victims while serving as a call for more
proactive support in preventing the spread of AIDS.
In May, GM joined the
Beijing Health Bureau and Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS in the
distribution of playing cards featuring information about AIDS and other
communicable diseases to migrant workers.
In August, GM supported
an AIDS orphans summer camp run by the Chiheng Foundation to help build
confidence and self-esteem.
Participants were given a tour of Shanghai GM.
