EPA and DEP Call for Green Buildings |
| New York City Department of Environmental Protection commissioner Emily Lloyd and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regional administrator Alan J. Steinberg met last night at Solar 1, a green-designed facility in New York, to announce the opening of the second annual Green Building Design Competition. The competition, which promotes the creation of sustainable development in residential, commercial, and industrial spaces in both existing and new building projects, as well as the city¡®s public spaces, is searching for innovations and ways to integrate green building practices this year. Entries, due January 17, should reflect the development of economic, innovative and sustainable advances to improve city living and workplace sites. These advances include: using less toxic building materials and chemicals; reducing water and energy consumption; planning for transportation and vehicular alternatives; improving air quality, incorporating into the city¡®s land and streets capes usable and reusable upgrades to promote an aesthetic and environmentally beneficial growth philosophy, and expanding upon an awareness of the need to preserve our natural ecosystems. Ideas for sustainable energy are encouraged¡ªsuch as solar and wind energy, brownfields developments, and water and energy systems in buildings. Winning entries for 2004 include the Queens Botanical Garden and the 2nd Avenue Subway. Visit www.nyc.gov/html/oec for more information and quick access to the entry form. |
