Beijing to raise water prices

Ministry of Water Resources revealed that the price of water for residential use in Beijing will be increase in the second half of this year.

Vice-minister Zhai Haohui said although Beijing is short of water resources, charges applied to water for residential use only covers the basic cost of providing it.

In addition to the price hike, the government will put controls on the total amount of water that can be used.

From August 1999 to August 2004, the cost of Beijing's water has been raised 9 times, from 0.12 yuan per ton to 2.8 yuan per ton. These are the highest prices charged for water anywhere in the country.
