BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhuanet) -- From 2001 to 2004, a total of 3,998 water pollution accidents occurred in China and the water quality of the country's major rivers kept deteriorating, according to a report on the implementation of water pollution prevention and control law.
Sheng Huaren, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) here on Wednesday made the report on the implementation of a water pollution prevention and control law to Chinese lawmakers.
Sheng said in his report the country's sewage discharge volume increased year on year, despite 111.5 billion yuan of national debt having been put into water pollution prevention and control.
According to statistics from the State Environmental Protection Administration, the country's annual sewage discharge volume increased to 48.2 billion tons in 2004 from 42.8 billion tons in 2001.
The report said in the 1980s, the annual sewage discharge to the Yellow River, China's second longest river, was around two billion tons, but today the figure has increased to more than four billion tons. Since 1993, more than 40 water pollution accidents occurred along the Yellow River.
The report said the water quality of the country's seven major rivers kept deteriorating. Currently more than 50 percent of the seven rivers' water can not meet drinking standards.
The report also said some progress has been made in industrial sewage discharge control. A total of 23.2 billion yuan has been spent to improve the country's industrial sewage treatment capacity. Since 2000, 15,000 factories, which caused severe pollution and highly consumed energy, have been ordered to close down to optimize the country's industrial structure.
The report said the country's urban sewage treatment capacity also improved. To date, the urban sewage processing rate has risen to 45 percent from 32 percent in 1999.
