The London borough of Bromley has officially opened its new household reuse and recycling centre, which is to be operated by waste management company Onyx. Bromley council said that the new centre at Waldo Road is much easier for residents to use, with 25 unloading bays available and recycling containers for a variety of materials. Bromley has sent a message out to its residents that the new site is no longer a tip for waste, but rather a resource for Bromley residents to make sure as much household waste as possible is sorted and recycled instead of going to landfill. Councillor George Taylor, executive councillor for the environment, opened the site last week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Partnership Speaking at the site opening, Cllr Taylor said: "These improvements meet residents' needs. The site will now be able to handle more throughput and enable us to recycle even more waste. Our partnership with Onyx has been key to helping us drive through these improvements." The site has an annual capacity of 25,000 tonnes of material, including garden waste, mixed wood, metal, cardboard, electrical waste, furniture and DIY waste, glass, paper and car oil. There is also an area for old fridges and freezers. Onyx will also have staff on site to direct residents to the correct bins and banks, as well as offering help carrying the waste and lifting it into the bins. Christopher Bellynck, director for Onyx Greater London, said: "This transformed site at Waldo Road is a real boom for recycling in Bromley. As residents sort their waste and bring it to the sits, they will be surprised at how little actually needs to be disposed of as rubbish. I hope residents find the site easy to use, and continue to take pride in boosting Bromley's recycling rate."
