LAKE CITY - Despite a recent increase of fees at the Wexford County Landfill, Missaukee county residents should not see an increase in recycling fees.
That being said, the Missaukee County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to select a bid for the waste hauler at the recycling center during its August meeting Wednesday.
Current hauler for the county's recycling program Matt Gunnerson, of Best Trash Removal, said as far as the recycling center goes, prices should not be affected by the increase the landfill.
"The recyclables go to the recycling center. It is separate from the landfill," he said. "I don't see any increases due to the landfill. It is not going to affect the rate. The hauling rate might go up because of fuel cost but not by much."
The recycling center, 6180 W. Sanborn Road, is open Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and takes things such as newsprint, magazines and catalogs, junk mail, boxboard and corrugated cardboard, plastic shopping bags and scrap metal. Once collected, the recyclables are hauled to Wexford County where they are bailed and then shipped to other places such as Manistee, to be recycled, Gunnerson said.
Due to fees for disposal being increased to $36 for municipal solid waste, Gunnerson said he has lost two customers who said they plan to recycle more. All things considered, Gunnerson said that was not too bad.
"I hope for most people to recycle more even though it will be a loss to my disposal business. I see a lot of stuff that could be recycled that isn't," Gunnerson said. "Lake City itself does a once a month curb side pick-up for recycling the first Tuesday of the month but the outskirts of Missaukee are not populated enough to make it worth doing a curb side."
Residents of Missaukee County also can use the Wexford County Landfill, located at 990 US 131 North. Verification of residency is required either with a local driver's license or a tax bill showing a property description in Missaukee County
The Missaukee County Board of Commissioners meets at 10 a.m. the second Tuesday of every month but due to a scheduling conflict the meeting was moved to Wednesday.
