New recycling program starts today
Date:09-12-2005 Source:
The city is starting its single- stream recycling system, which requires households to put paper, glass, cans and other recyclables into special, wheeled carts for pickup by trucks with robot arms. The city, which will still collect regular garbage under the old, manual system on a weekly basis, will pick up recyclables with the automated system every other week. The changes are supposed to lower costs, increase productivity, help handle growth, make the job safer for employees and increase recycling.
It's the biggest change in collecting solid waste in Madison in a long time. And it begins today.
