China, Kazakhstan mull power plant

BEIJING, Oct. 11 -- Kazakhstan and China were considering building a power plant in northern Kazakhstan's Pavlodar region to meet growing demand in both countries, Kazakhstan's government press service said Monday.

"The total cost of the project is estimated around US$4 billion," government spokesman Marat Buldekbayev said.

He said Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Danyal Akhmetov visited the Pavlodar region last week to meet with representatives of TOO Bogatyr Access Komir, a unit of U.S.-based Access Industries.

The company was being considered as one of the main suppliers for the power station, Buldekbayev said.

Bogatyr is the country's largest coal producer, with an annual output of around 35 million tons. The company exports to Russia and is also the main supplier of Kazakhstan's two largest power stations, which have a total capacity of 3,000 megawatts. Both are located in the Pavlodar region.

The Kazakhstanskaya Pravda daily said in a separate report that the power plant will have six blocks, each with an installed capacity of 600Mw.
