Students boost recycling

STUDENTS have taken up the recycling challenge with the introduction of green collecting boxes in every classroom.

Eighty of the boxes were delivered to St Peter's School in Huntingdon, by Huntingdonshire District Council and students and teachers will be encouraged to use them for recycling of nonconfidential paper.

Coun Mike Simpson, executive councillor for operations at the district council, was on hand to help unload the boxes.

He told students: "I am delighted to see what you are doing here.

"This is an excellent scheme. You are our future adults and you have the opportunity to shape your future.

"You can also prove to adult sceptics that recycling is 'of now' and we can all contribute to protecting the future."

Students at the school have studied recycling and waste issues and have been involved in litter picks in the school area as part of their citizenship activities.

David Furniss, headteacher, said: "This is something which the pupils themselves have wanted to do.

"They are very concerned about litter and recycling and their efforts already have had quite an impact in school.

"I am delighted they want to do something to help enhance their environment."
