District expands e-recycling

The Chittenden Solid Waste District has expanded an E-Waste recycling program designed to collect the electronic devices consumers want to throw away.

This month, all six of the waste district's full service facilities began to accept electronics, including televisions, computers, cell phones and stereo equipment, to be used for recycling instead of disposal, said Mike Reilly, spokesman for Chittenden Solid Waste District.

Electronics have been accepted at the Williston facility for the past year, after state legislation was passed ruling that equipment from businesses could not be sent to landfills.
"Our take has been, if it's hazardous it doesn't really matter where it came from," Reilly said. As part of the electronic recycling program, Good Point Recycling of Middlebury picks up the items dropped off by consumers and reuses as many of the items as they can, Reilly said.

The Williston facility collected more than 94,000 pounds of electronic waste, he said. As part of encouraging the recycling process, the waste district has reduced its recycling fees.
The E-Waste program is available at facilities in Burlington, Essex, Milton, Richmond, South Burlington and Williston.
