N.W.T. gov't to get into recycling business

The N.W.T.'s minister of energy and natural resources says his government has no choice but to begin to collect cans and bottles for recycling in communities where there are no depots.

Michael Miltenberger told the legislature Tuesday his department has come up with a solution to the problem of making recycling universal in the Northwest Territories.

The department itself will collect the recyclables. He says because a deposit will be charged throughout the territories, consumers have to be able to get their money back no matter where they live.

"We're going to be working to ensure every northerner has the capacity to return their bottles and get refunded or their beverage containers," he says.

"And at the same time we're going to be working more actively in the communities to arrange with groups, businesses, schools, whomever it is, we have to encourage them to take advantage of this business opportunity."

Miltenberger says he wants the government's foray into the recycling business is going to be short term.

He couldn't say what it would cost.

Nine communities will have depots ready to open when the new recycling program begins next week.

Environment and Natural Resource officers will run the program everywhere else.
