China, Australia to cooperate in clean coal power project

The Harbin Power Equipment Corporation (HPEC), China's leading manufacturer of power generation equipment, will invest in a clean-coal power plant this year in Australia in cooperation with an Australian energy development company.

A memorandum of cooperation has been signed between the Harbin Power Engineering Co. Ltd (HPE), a subsidiary of the HPEC, and the Melbourne-based HRL Limited, to cooperatively build the plant in the Latrobe Valley of Victoria, a southeastern state of Australia, an HPE source said.

The two sides will each take a fifty percent stake in the whole project, the source said, adding construction of the project is expected to start at the end of this year.

The HRL Limited is a developer of advanced Integrated Drying and Gasification Combined Circle (IDGCC) technologies, which are designed to produce electricity at low cost and high efficiency from low-rank coal, like brown coal.
