Geneva, 16 December 2008 - With the generous support from a number of WBCSD members, The Corporate Ecosystem Services Review (ESR) is now also available in Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. The Japanese version was supported by Hitachi Chemical, the Portuguese version by Brisa and the Spanish version by Holcim and Telefonica.
Companies depend on the services that healthy ecosystems provide, such as freshwater, wood, water purification, pollination and natural hazard protection among others. Recognizing that degradation of these 揺cosystem services?can pose a number of risks to corporate performance as well as create new business opportunities, the WBCSD, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Meridian Institute developed the ESR.
The ESR is designed to help companies make the connection between the health of ecosystems and their business bottom line. It provides a structured methodology that helps managers develop strategies to manage their risks and opportunities arising from their company's dependence and impacts on ecosystems.
Since its launch in March 2008, more than thirty companies have successfully applied the ESR, a number that is expected to grow now that the ESR is available in additional languages.
Along with the translated versions of the ESR, Brisa took the lead in translating three other recent WBCSD publications on ecosystems and business:
- Business & Biodiversity ?The Handbook for Corporate Action (
- Business and Ecosystems - Ecosystem Challenges and Business Implications (
- Markets for Ecosystem Services ?New Challenges and Opportunities for Business and the Environment (
The WBCSD is grateful for the support and commitment its work on ecosystems continues to receive.
