China mulls certification system for low carbon products
INTERFAX-CHINA 2009-11-19

China is considering certifying some low carbon products as part of its efforts to improve energy conservation and environmental protection, a senior government official said on Nov. 18.

The goal of the policy is to help the public change their consumption habits in the coming low carbon era, said Wu Xiaoqing, deputy minister of the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) at a workshop in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.

The policy would then encourage Chinese manufactures to strengthen research and development for low carbon products in the future, Wu said.

China intends to start experimenting with how to control emissions from some of the dirtiest industries and some of the dirtiest regions, Wu said.

China's energy intensity, which is the amount of energy that a country expends producing each unit of gross domestic product (GDP), has shrunk by 3.35 percent on an annual basis in the first half of this year.

China is intent on hitting its the target for reducing energy intensity by 20 percent over the 2005-2010 period, said Ma Liqiang, vice secretariat from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) at the workshop.
