Geneva, March 27, 2012– Peter Bakker has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maria van der Hoeven, Executive Director, International Energy Agency (IEA). This has set the stage for the two organizations to work together on helping shape low carbon energy policies and identifying effective and sustainable technologies.
The WBCSD/IEA collaboration will address the buildings and transport sectors focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energy policies, energy technology roadmaps, smart grids policies, and policies and measures for climate change.
The MoU was signed at a workshop called The Bumpy Road to Effective Implementation of Buildings’ Energy Efficiency Policies, which was co-convened by the WBCSD and IEA. To view workshop videos click here.
Workshop outcomes include:
l Agreement on the potential for reducing energy consumption in the buildings sector;
l Recognition of the importance of cooperation in a complex and fragmented sector;
l The need for awareness-raising on sustainable policies and technologies, policy incentives necessary for business to progress and sustainable lifestyles;
l Identification of Africa and China as regions where urbanization is accelerating.
The event was attended by more than 100 representatives from government, international organizations and business.
