First China Future Energy Forum 2013 Held in Beijing

On Dec. 30th, First China Future Energy Forum 2013 was held in Beijing. Organized by China Europe International Business School(CEIBS) and Economy & Nation Weekly along with supporting organizer World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the forum was entitled “Value Creation in the Energy Industry.” Over 150 senior representatives who serve as government policy-makers, global industry leaders and renowned academics from International Energy Agency (IEA), China Federation Of Industrial Economics(CFIE), Xinhua News Agency, BP China, BASF etc.

Mr. Tanaka, global associate for Energy Security and Sustainability, Institute of Energy Economics, Japan and former Executive Director, International Energy Agency (IEA), spoke about “Energy Security for the 21st Century: Messages of the World Energy Outlooks”. He explained in detail how patterns of global energy production and demand are rapidly shifting. By 2035 North America will be energy independent, while almost 90% of Middle Eastern oil exports will go to Asia. He said China must be prepared that this may have some impact on US foreign policy in the Middle East. He said it will also become increasingly important for China, Japan and other Asian countries to work together to establish a new formula for protecting their access to energy sources and develop a new formula for setting prices for the energy resources they import. In particular he said that China and Japan must set aside their differences to work together to find a peaceful solution to ensure mutual energy security.

Mr. Li Yizhong, member of the Standing Committee and vice chair of the Committee for Economic Affairs, National Committee of the CPPCC, spoke about “Adapt to Change, Improve Structure for Green, Low-carbon & Sustainable Energy Growth”. He emphasized that China must think carefully about how to achieve sustainable clean energy solutions. He offers profound and thorough analysis on the underlying problems and structure problems of China’s energy and shared his ponder over energy structure improvement and guarding energy security.

Mr. Peter Bakker, president of the WBCSD delivered a speech themed “Enterprise’s Leading and Advocating Role in Energy Value Chain”, shedding light to the fact that the global financial crisis, increasing social conflicts and environment pollution calls for national solution from governments rather than simply upon world leaders. Mr. Peter Bakker briefly introduced Action 2020 and WBCSD’s 6 major solutions to address climate change and further state that the priority lied not in the solution but in the large-scale implimantation of those solutions, which calls the attention in 3 respects: innovation, improvement of sustainable initiate foundations and cooperation.

Invited guests from government, enterprises and NGO discussed and shared cases on issues such as “Shale Gas: A New Revolution in the Energy Sector”, “The Battle over New Energy Vehicle Development”, “Green Economy, Global Solution and China’s Route”, “The Leap in New Energy Development vs. the Grid Bottleneck”.

Invited guests from government, enterprises and NGO discussed and shared cases on issues such as “Shale Gas: A New Revolution in the Energy Sector”, “The Battle over New Energy Vehicle Development”, “Green Economy, Global Solution and China’s Route”, “The Leap in New Energy Development vs. the Grid Bottleneck”.

Mr. Guan Zhihua shared BASF’s development strategy and introduced BASF’s application of social responsibility and its wish on the company’s sustainable development around the topic of chemical industry company’s green development and innovation. He stated that corpotation’s communication with the society is crucial and that the real actualization of green economy covering the whole value chain depends crucially on a corporate’ motivating its value chain corporations to work together on social responsibility.

Mr. Zhai Qi introduced WBCSD’s Action 2020 and business’s role, route and solutions within his speech themed with “Business solution and Energy Conservation & Emission Reduction”. He shared China enterprises’ efforts and practices on climate change, discharge of harmful substances, fresh water resources and sustainable life style. Guests attending the forum discussed and concluded that Business community must find out the optimized mode of corporation with government to inspire large-scale solution and innovation on issues like energy shortage and environment pollution.
