On July 16, Jeffrey Sachs, director of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network and director of Earth Institute at Columbia University, wrote Financial Times an article “How to decarbonize the global economy” which offers a new perspective on how countries can avoid the danger of climate change and achieve sustainable development.
The research team found four main pillars of deep decarbonisation. First, (according to different circumstances of different countries) converting to low-carbon electricity generated by wind power, solar power, nuclear power blended with fossil fuels and using carbon capture and storage technology. Second, promoting the electrification of personal transportation, building and some industrial process which are powered by low-carbon electricity. Third, massively improving the energy efficiency. Fourth, besides the energy system, transforming the global deforestation and land degradation into afforestation and land rehabilitation ,thereby to make the terrestrial biosphere a net carbon sink rather than a net carbon source.
