The Energy-safe Cities Expert Symposium was held in Beijing on 28-29 October 2014. It was organized by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI)’s East Asia and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, and Energy. Drawing more than 70 participants, including East Asian local government representatives and internationally leading experts, the symposium discussed ways of how the countries can transform their urban energy systems to turn low-carbon, low-risk and resilient by the year 2030; and also to undertake Goal 2030 for 100% renewable and energy-safe cities.
Zhai Qi, vice secretary general of CBCSD, also made remarks on the symposium. He introduced the energy issue included in China’s urbanization drive, and analyzed the major features of China’s urban areas from the perspective of city scale, local distribution and development phases. He made a comparison between Beijing’s Hutong and city texture of new development areas, and came to the conclusion that the urbanization drive in China is now deviating from “putting people first”, many problems occurred in environment and society because of excessive vehicle usage. He also analyzed the reasons of the haze from the perspective of Beijing’s geographical condition, and provided constructive solutions to the sustainable development of cities in China.
