WISCO LiberiaBong Mines Succeeding in Heavy Oil Power Generation

Confronting with falling price of iron ore in global market and rocketing cost caused by light oil for power generation, WISCO Sino-Africa Bong Mines realized heavy oil power generation successfully on 10th, October. It’s another fruit after the Bong Mines reached the new high records in quantity and quality in the midst of combating Ebola.

Since the Bong Mines power station was completed and put into production in July last year, WISCO Sino-Africa Company has formulated plan and measures in heavy oil power generation. Due to some objective reasons and being short of heavy oil sales in Liberia, diesel was commonly used in power station. After going through the tough negotiation for one year, WISCO Sino-Africa Company finally signed an agreement with local government in July, 2014. However, when the heavy oil was purchased in August, Ebola plague broke out in most areas of Liberia, the heavy oil conversion supplier wasn’t able to be onsite timely. Upon the request from high management of WISCO Sino-Africa Company repeatedly, the technicians came to Bong Mines on September 26th.

In the face of Ebola plague, the company attached importance to plague prevention; meanwhile, it adhered to technical reform. On the basis of not shutting down, the company clearly proposed to finish the power generation reform by means of heavy oil instead of light oil before 20th, October. The high management has come to power station to discuss reform plan with technicians more than once. Not only material support was provided, specialists were also arranged to assist the reform. They made commissioning on three generator sets one by one for heavy oil conversion. After going through the effort for half a month, the mission was finally done ten days in advance.

After Bong Mines realized heavy oil power generation successfully, the electricity cost would reduce by 10 US dollars for iron ore concentrates per ton.
