Innovative technology drives smart energy industry development

ABB representatives attended the 2nd World Intelligence Congress in Tianjin from May 16 to 18, and participated in the "Smart Energy Innovation and Development Forum". The forum, themed on “Promote diversified application, create intelligent future”, aims to push the development of China’s smart energy industry by establishing a connected and collaborative communication platform for the construction of a safe and efficient modern energy system as well as the deep integration of energy and information.

In the face of a global energy revolution, renewable energy, energy interconnection and digital technologies will play an important role in promoting a stronger, smarter and greener power grid. The deep integration of the Internet, advanced information technology and the energy industry is set to suit the emergence of new technologies, new models and new formats in energy Internet. ABB focuses on developing innovative technology for future power grids, including power transmission technology of traditional high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and light HVDC, energy storing, digital substation solution, asset management and other enterprise management software solutions.

Dr. Liu Qianjin, Chief Technology Officer of ABB China, said, “Continuing a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB has been at the forefront of every industrial revolution, driving evolvement and development of various industries. As the world is accelerating the energy revolution, ABB is firmly dedicated to becoming a partner of choice in energy re-structuring. ABB’s digital solutions help customers in all industries to increase efficiency, decrease energy consumption and create value.”

Dr. Liu and other experts had a panel discussion on such topics as benefits brought by the integration of digital technology and smart energy, the inspiration from the Internet for the development of the energy industry, the role of energy enterprises in the Internet era, and suggestions to the local government of Baodi District on how to boost the integration of traditional energy and new energy through upgrading and transformation. He said that to successfully realize sustainable development and build a stronger, smarter and greener grid, the key lies in having a clear vision and in-depth cooperations between policymakers, inspectors, power grid companies and technology providers.

Bernard Deck, Chief Technology Officer of Nanjing SAC Automation Co., Ltd. (a joint venture company of SAC and ABB) made a keynote speech at the forum, introducing ABB Ability™ Ellipse® software solution that is delivering a cross-enterprise approach to connected asset lifecycle management. This also includes a new generation of the ABB Ability™ Ellipse® APM (Asset Performance Management) solution, which helps asset-intensive industries improve efficiency and optimize costs by using predictive analytics based on ABB’s decades of industry expertise to help prevent failures and improve reliability across an organization’s critical assets.

ABB Ability Ellipse is one of the latest offerings within the ABB Ability™ family. The solution embeds industry best practices and business processes and leverages real-time equipment data and the Industrial Internet of Things to connect predictive analytics and asset management systems to the mobile worker in the field. It is available either as an ‘on-premise’ or ‘Software as a Service’ solution for electric utilities and other asset-intensive sectors like renewables and transport.

As an excellent example for helping customers to realize interconnection with the Industrial Internet of Things, to transfer data analysis to action and to create value in reality, ABB was selected to deliver its ABB Ability™ APM software solution to the Inner Mongolia Electric Power Research Institute (IMEPRI) in July, 2017. ABB installed its ABB Ability APM solution at the institute’s state maintenance lab, to guarantee the reliable operation of ultrahigh pressure and high-tension transformer within the power network.

Inner Mongolia Electric Power Research Institute manages multiple electric power technology labs, whose researching fields include online and offline test, supervision and compliance, breakdown monitoring and other key issues. During the process of transformer monitoring, ABB’s ABB Ability Ellipse APM solution discovered two pieces of failing equipment in a realtime manner before an immediate return of them to the factory for repariment, effectively avoiding losses. As a key part of ABB’s digital substation concept, this solution collects status data to optimize equipment operation, substation efficency and cost effectiveness, and reduces the failure time of transformer and circuit breaker by nearly 50%.

ABB Ability™ APM solutions leverage data from connected devices to generate actionable insights that help reduce forced downtime and outages, including catastrophic events and unplanned emergency work. They reduce cost, time, and charges related to planned work, and can extend asset life. They also enable lower capital expenditure and working capital needs while reducing environmental, regulatory, and safety risk.

ABB has more than 40 years of pioneering experience in the digital field. In future, ABB will continue to lead the innovation in smart technology, drive the development of technology from automation to autonomous, and build the digital ecosystem together with our partners.

From May 16 to 18, 2018, the 2nd World Intelligence Congress will be held in Tianjin, which is cosponsored by National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Network Information Office, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, China Association for Science and Technology and Tianjin Municipal People's Government. The theme of this conference is "Intelligent Age: New Progress, New Trends, New Initiatives", a series of events including conferences, exhibitions, events and intelligent experiences will be held and bring together leading-edge products in the smart technology industry at different latitudes: Land, Air and Sea.
