China's Liu Zhenmin has formally taken office as a new Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. The former Chinese vice foreign minister was appointed to the position in charge of international economic and social issues by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in June.
As a senior diplomatic officer, Liu is no stranger to the corridors of the UN. He even once served as China's deputy permanent representative to the organization.
From being Vice Foreign Minister of China, to UN Under-Secretary-General, Liu said his 30 years of experience in the diplomatic service would be especially valuable in his new job. Discussing his new mission, Liu described the UN a multi-cultural community, which attracts people from all over the world with a common goal.
Liu told CGTN of his delight at seeing more and more Chinese faces on the UN staff. He said this shows the rising status of China's position in the UN. At the same time, Liu said China is increasingly willing to serve the international community.
