Wang Yi Attends High-level Informal Dialogue on Climate Change

On September 19, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the High-level Informal Dialogue on Climate Change at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Wang Yi said in his speech that with the Paris Agreement coming into effect in November last year, the efforts made from collaboration of the international community in tackling climate change have entered a critical stage. We must honestly implement the solemn commitments made by leaders of each country in Paris, unswervingly stick to the general direction of tackling climate change via cooperation, and well carry out intended nationally determined contributions based on practical actions. Developed countries should fulfill their commitments to provide support for developing countries in fund, technique, capacity building and other aspects. The international community should organically combine climate change with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, make overall arrangement and well cope with challenges while pursuing development.

Wang Yi pointed out that the effective response to climate change and the full implementation of the goal of sustainable development are inseparable with the transformation of global energy production and consumption. First of all, we must change energy development concept, so that the green, low-carbon and sustainable development path can be deeply rooted in people’s mind, and become the common pursuit of the international community.

Secondly, we should focus on pushing the transformation of global energy structure, actively develop new energy and renewable energy, promote the clean usage of fossil energy, and strive for improving energy efficiency and building a sustainable and low-emission modern energy system.

Thirdly, we need to achieve transformation of cooperation pattern of global energy cooperation and improve energy governance for achieving mutual benefit and win-win results based on the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits. Special attention should be paid to developing countries to help them to afford and be accessible to green energy, so as to achieve the goal of “Sustainable Energy for All” advocated by the UN.

Wang Yi expressed that China attaches great importance to addressing the climate change issue and international energy cooperation, adheres to implementing the development concepts of innovation, coordination, green, openness and shared benefit, and strives to build a beautiful China with azure sky, green land and limpid water. Through unremitting efforts, China has made remarkable achievements in energy transformation. China’s capacity of hydropower, wind power, photovoltaic power generators ranks first in the world and the scale of the nuclear power under construction is also on the top of the world. At the same time, China will actively promote cooperation in energy with all countries, particularly with developing countries, and walk on a path of sustainable development through the “Belt and Road” initiative, capacity cooperation, South-South cooperation and other platforms. China is willing to join hands with all countries to march forward and achieve harmonious co-existence between man and nature to create a home planet featuring sustainable development for our offspring.
