The General Office of MEP printed out the trial Measures on the Environment and Health for National Environmental Protection (hereinafter referred to as the Measures) recently, for the purposes of strengthening the risk management for the environment and health and ensuring the concepts of public health to be integrated into environmental policies.

The competent environmental protection department of a city which has at least one district and is at or above prefectural level shall, under the leadership of the local people’s government at the same level or the guidance of the competent environmental protection department at a superior level, be responsible for the environment and health work within its administrative jurisdiction, formulate departmental programs and plans on the environment and health issues, and work to incorporate those issues into local economic and social development plans and environmental protection plans.

Ministry of Environmental Protection shall make and implement overall plans for monitoring the environment and health risks. The competent environmental protection department at provincial level shall monitor such risks within its administrative jurisdiction in accordance with national technical specifications on this area.

The Measures also provides for the circumstances where the competent environmental protection department of a city which has at least one district and is at or above prefectural level shall organize investigations into environment and health issues.

Also, the local governments shall become better at applying the environment and health monitoring, investigation and risk assessment results, according to the Measures.
