Global Governance and Ecological Civilization Roundtable Held

China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED) Roundtable Meeting on Global Governance and Ecological Civilization was held on the morning of June 20 in Brussels, Belgium.

This roundtable was held on the sidelines of the China-Canada-EU Climate Summit, which will boost CCICED’s role as a platform for facilitating two-way exchanges between China and the world on environment and development. During this roundtable, CCICED Task Force on Global Governance and Ecological Civilization was fully initiated.

CCICED Members and Special Advisors, team leaders from 3 Special Policy Studies(SPS) under the Task Force on Global Governance and Ecological Civilization, namely SPS on China’s Contributions to Global Climate Governance, SPS on Post 2020: Global Biodiversity Conservation and SPS on Global Ocean Governance and Ecological Civilization, as well as relevant scholars and experts were invited and exchanged their views on key issues of major concerns in the construction of global environmental governance system, such as climate governance, biodiversity conservation, and ocean governance, thus to provide suggestions on how China should position itself and what role it should play in the system of global environmental governance.

Mr. Frans Timmermans, CCICED Member and the First Vice President of the European Commission attended the meeting and delivered welcoming remarks.

Ms. Catherine McKenna, CCICED Executive Vice Chairperson and Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada chaired the meeting and delivered remarks.

Mr. XIE Zhenhua, CCICED Vice Chairperson and China’s Special Representative on Climate Change, and Mr. Erik Solheim, CCICED Vice Chairperson and Executive Director of UN Environment attended the meeting and delivered opening remarks.

Mr. Vidar Helgesen, CCICED Vice Chairperson and Norway’s Special Envoy to the High-level Panel on Building a Sustainable Ocean Economy attended and concluded the meeting.

CCICED Members and Special Advisors, relevant scholars and experts, and representatives from CCICED partners were brought together to discuss on topics including Highlighting Priority Areas for Global Environmental Governance and Global Strategic Approaches and China’s Role.
