WOC Secretariat spoke at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Workshop on Enhancing Ocean Observations in Geneva on 5-6 February.
The expected outcome of the workshop is a set of recommendations with relevant standards and a workable list of marine meteorological and oceanographic variables, including from exclusive economic zones, indispensable for the issue of timely and accurate storm warnings for the safety of life at sea and the protection of life and property in coastal and offshore areas. Two sets of recommendations are foreseen:
Short term approach with focus on facilitating the making of surface marine meteorological observations in support of safety of life and property at sea;
Longer term approach, and future collaboration with the IOC of UNESCO with regard to ocean observations requirements, including in coastal regions, in particular in support of Earth System Prediction and hydro-climate services.
This outcome will be submitted to the World Meteorological Congress for consideration in the updating of Resolution 9 (Cg-IX) and they will be offered as a contribution to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and its objectives I (Knowledge of the ocean system), III (Ocean-related hazards) and IV (Cooperation in observation, data and other infrastructure).
