• Eco-city ranks among world's first demonstration cities for sustainable development and standardization

On October 19, the “Future Community – Standards First” International Symposium on Sustainable Development Standards and the International Standards for Sustainable International Cities Alliance was held in Hangzhou. During the event, Wu Yanhong, deputy director of the Legal Affairs Bureau of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city(the Eco-city for short), took over the “Global Sustainable Development Standardization Demonstration City” award from Etienne Kelio, Secretary General of the International Standard City Alliance for Sustainable Development, marking the Eco-city rank among the world's first demonstration cities for sustainable development and standardization. Two areas won this award and the other is the Hangzhou Central Business District.

After two years of hard trials, Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city has improved itself in terms of attractiveness, happiness, social cohesion, resilience, environmental protection and improvement, and rational use of resources, as well as an international standard test for sustainable urban development. The district standards provide valuable feedback and suggestions and are the first results of sustainable development in China. In the next step, the Eco-city will actively meet international standards, continue to promote the construction of urban sustainable development standards system, and build China's first urban sustainable development standard system demonstration zone.

The world's first "case city" is to promote successful experience into international standards.

Around the sustainable development of the city, in October 2016, Hangzhou, China and the French city of Versailles, France jointly announced the pilot city work for the international standard of sustainable urban development in the world, and established the “International Sustainable Standardization for City Coalition” (ISSCC). Since then, 28 members including Rennes in France, Grasmere in the United Kingdom, Astana in Kazakhstan, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and Hangzhou and Guangzhou in China have been listed as pilot cities for sustainable development standardization. The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city was awarded the pilot city in October 2017 and became the first Chinese park to qualify for this pilot.

In combination with its own reality, the Eco-city actively promotes the construction of the Eco-city and smart city to international standards. In October 2017, it was identified as the world's first case city for the implementation of the Urban Sustainable Development Management System.

In conjunction with the progress of standard applications, the Eco-city initiated an initiative to develop international standards for the implementation of sustainable development in small and medium-sized cities, and systematically summarized the relevant experiences of the Eco-city in the past decade. In April of this year, the standard was voted by 41 countries, officially registered as the implementation guide for the sustainable development of small cities in ISO/PWI 24222, and received the attention and support of Russia, France, Germany and other countries.

At the same time, the International Standards for Sustainable Urban Development (ISO), which was officially released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), also incorporated relevant experience in the assessment of the Eco-city indicator system into standard cases, as a reference case for the implementation of sustainable development in other cities around the world to replicate and promote the Eco-city’s related experience.

From "pilot" to "demonstration", the Eco-city aims at building a sustainable development standard system demonstration zone.

“Since being selected as the “International Standard Test Area for Urban Sustainable Development” in 2017, the Eco-city has gradually established and continuously improved the six areas of urban attraction, happiness, social cohesion, resilience, environmental protection and improvement, and rational use of resources. The management system has achieved certain results, which enabled the Eco-city to be upgraded from the more than 20 'test' areas in the world to the 'demonstration' area.” Wu Yanhong said that the Eco-city has been able to replicate since its inception. The mission of “being promotable” has become the world's first demonstration city, marking that the Eco-city has established a set of international management systems based on its own basic conditions and has gained international recognition. With the participation of more and more cities in China and the world in the construction of the International Standard Pilot Zone for Sustainable Urban Development in recent years, the development experience of the Eco-city will also rely on this system platform to accelerate the replication and promotion.

According to the relevant person in charge of the Eco-city Administrative Committee, next, the Eco-city will actively meet international standards, continue to promote the construction of urban sustainable development standards system, and focus on strengthening 12 areas of innovation, health, culture, economy, environment and smart city. Development and upgrading of regional transformation and upgrading and high-quality development capabilities are expected to be the first urban sustainable development standard system demonstration zone in China in three years.

In addition, the Eco-city will build a sustainable development research and promotion center, deeply participate in the international (national) standardization of urban sustainable development, actively carry out international standardization cooperation and exchanges, and provide “ecological city experience” for the sustainable development of other cities in the world.
