UPM leads the integration of bio and forest industries into a new, sustainable and innovation-driven future. Our products are made of renewable raw materials and are recyclable. UPM consists of three Business Groups: Energy and pulp, Paper, and Engineered materials. The Group employs around 23,000 people and it has production facilities in 15 countries. In 2008, UPM's sales amounted to EUR 7.7 billion. UPM's shares are listed on the Helsinki stock exchange.
Since 1998 UPM has invested in China nearly USD 1.2 billion in a fine paper mill, a labelstock plant, a RFID electronic tags plant and a research and development centre. UPM Changshu Paper Mill, with the capacity of 800,000 tons of high quality fine papers, is the single largest Finnish investment project in China. It is among the top producers of uncoated woodfree fine papers in China. UPM Raflatac Changshu plant and UPM Raflatac RFID Guangzhou plant offer diversified label materials and RFID tags serving the needs of the fast growing Chinese and Asia-Pacific markets. UPM Asia R&D Centre focuses on the research of the wood and non-wood papermaking fibres available locally while providing support to production units and customers in China and the Asia Pacific Region. In addition, UPM Wisa timber and Wisa plywood products have been used in major national key construction and civil engineering projects in China.
UPM is strongly committed to continuous improvement in economic, social and environmental performance. UPM has invested heavily on state-of-the-art equipment and has applied best practices in its China operations in production processes as well as environmental matters. Several official environmental recognitions have been awarded to UPM Changshu Paper Mill such as the nomination as one of "China State Environmentally Friendly Enterprises". In 2008 UPM Changshu Paper Mill became the first enterprise to receive China Green Label for Copy Paper. UPM has been an active corporate citizen in China with cooperation and assistance projects with different stakeholders such as the universities, NGOs and local communities.
