Fulfilling CSR contributes to enterprises’ sustainable development

Wang Haixiang, vice president of GKN China, pointed out that fulfilling Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributes to the sustainable development of enterprises in an interview with People's Daily Online during the gala dinner of 2014 British Business Awards.

"GKN has done a lot of work in terms of CSR,” said Wang. “GKN tries its best to secure a safe environment and clean water for its employees. GKN also spares no efforts to guarantee the quality of its products as well as to maintain its development without causing damage to environment.” GKN started the University Sponsorship in 2009, which covers 10 universities and is supporting hundreds of Chinese students to realize their dreams to get education.

More and more graduates who had been helped by GKN are likely to work in GKN, and a majority of its employees are willing work in GKN all their life, which offers driving force for GKN’s development, Wang said.

Wang also pointed that many Chinese companies lack the awareness of fulfilling CSR. More than 1, 000 Chinese enterprises published their CSR reports in 2013, but there are still a large number of Chinese enterprises which pay little attention to CSR. He added that such enterprises are unlikely to have sustainable development.

"Chinese government should guide and encourage more enterprises to fulfill their CSR,” said Wang. “As long as some enterprises are encouraged by the government to set a good example in fulfilling CSR, others are likely to follow the example.”

The British Business Awards is organized by the British Chamber of Commerce in China and the China-Britain Business Council. The Awards recognizes companies and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to UK-China trade and investment through their innovation, enterprise and endeavor. This year, GKN has been chosen as one of the finalist of Corporate Social Responsibility Award.
