Geneva, March 19, 2012– A summary report from the WBCSD/ Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) Washington D.C. dialogue event on access to energy has now been published. Video excerpts from the event are also available here.
The dialogue highlighted examples from leading companies, including WBCSD members GDF SUEZ, AEP and Novozymes. Contributors discussed how they are tackling associated challenges, and their perspectives on the role of public policy, regulation and financing to catalyze business investment in this domain.
Participants identified the need for:
l Effective public-private partnerships and cross-sector collaborative approaches between key stakeholders to achieve universal access to energy;
l cooperative governments and well-designed, stable policy and regulation as critical enabling factors;
l Public and private financing structures that include participation by local banks and other lending sources to ensure adequacy of capital and evaluation of risk; and
l Real world examples to encourage optimism that collaboration between large businesses and local entrepreneurs can successfully deliver energy to those without.
The event also included the local launch of the new WBCSD publication Business Solutions to Enable Energy Access for All by Matthew Lynch, Program Manager of the WBCSD’s Development Focus Area. It was attended by nearly 80 representatives of companies, civil society, investment funds, inter-governmental organizations, NGOs, and academic institutions
